Ankobra: Communities set up 'village banking' scheme to cushion fisherfolks.

Image
Communities along the Ankobra River Estuary have invented a village banking and savings and loan scheme. The residents came up with the idea when they realised that if fishermen and fish mongers formed groups and saved money they can access loans for their operations. This innovation was disclosed to selected journalists who visited the Sanwoma village in the Nzema East District in the Western Region as part of a three day media training programme organised by the USAID Sustainable Fisheries Management Project. In rural areas and in economies as diverse as most fishing communities along the coastal areas, Village Banking is allowed to enable those with scarce resources to borrow, invest and grow their fishing businesses. They also allow fishermen and fish mongers who are routinely denied credit from the traditional banks to build enterprises to sustain their livelihoods. The Senior Project Officer of the ‘Hen Mpoano’ Civil Society Organisation and a local partner of the USAID, Balert...

WORLD: Tesla in fatal California crash was on autopilot.

Image
Electric carmaker Tesla says a vehicle involved in a fatal crash in California was in Autopilot mode, raising further questions about the safety of self-driving technology. One of the company's Model X cars crashed into a roadside barrier and caught fire on 23 March. Tesla says Autopilot was engaged at the time of the accident involving the driver, 38, who died soon afterwards. But they did not say whether the system had detected the concrete barrier. "The driver had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive," a statement on the company's website said. "The driver's hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision." "The driver had about five seconds and 150m (490ft) of unobstructed view of the concrete divider... but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken," the statement added. Tesla's Autopilot system does some of the things a fully autonomous machine can do. It can ...

Keep on playing my daughter's songs--------- Ebony's mother.

Image
Beatrice Oppong, mother of the late music artiste, Ebony, has appealed to the media to keep playing her daughter’s songs. In an interview with Adom TV, she stated that she desires to keep the memories of her daughter alive, and therefore wants the media to keep playing the songs. “I still don’t believe my daughter is dead even after her burial, because her songs are all over, reminding me of the great daughter I bore. I plead with you, the people in media not to stop playing her songs”, she stated. She also debunked rumours circulating that she and her daughter were not really on good terms, leading to Ebony’s behavior. “My daughter and I were very close and I used to come to Ghana twice every year to spend time with her, but the nature of her job did not allow us to spend much time together as we would have expected”, she said. According to her she is surprised at the manner in which some Ghanaians talk about a supposed grudge between them. She urged Ghanaians to stop spreading thos...

Entertainment: Patapaa to title his new song Kumchacha.

Image
The ‘One Corner’ crooner Patapaa has hinted of plans to rename his new and yet to be released banger after Ghanaian controversial pastor Kumchacha. The Swedru-based musician was quick to add that the new song has nothing or whatsoever to do with the popular Ghanaian pastor Kumchacha. Patapaa during an interview with Prince Benjamin of Class 91.3 FM also assured music lovers especially his fans to expect another smash hit sooner than later which would be hotter than his ‘one corner’ song. “So my fans expect another heat called ‘Kumchacha’ which will be hit than ‘one corner’. That song is too serious, so watch out. Dropping soon’, Patapaa revealed. Patapaa came into the limelight after a chief was captured dancing to his one corner song during the Akwambo Festival at Agona-Swedru in the Central Region in 2017 which made people go ‘mad’ and showcase different dancing skills to the song.

Lifestyle: Guys must stop asking this question after sex.

Image
The last time I had sex, it was with a guy I’d met on a dating site. We'd been dating for about a month and a half, and on this night it was cold and rainy, so we decided to stay in, watch TV, and order pizza. We eventually ended up having sex on his couch. Afterwards, he rolled over, panting and sweaty, and asked me the one post-coital question that always makes me see red: “Did you come?” When I was younger, I was totally OK with this question. In fact, I thought it was kind of sweet. As women, we’re taught to prioritize men’s pleasure, often at the expense of our own. So I initially interpreted it as an indication that maybe my partner saw that my pleasure was important, too. But eventually, I grew up and realized what a total cop-out this question is. Guys, take it from me: women don’t want you to ask them if they had an orgasm after you have sex. Because when you do that, you’re implicitly telling them that their pleasure is, quite literally, an afterthought for you...

I am still a politician---- 'Unrepentant' Koku Anyidoho.

Image
Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the fact that he spent two days in solitude confinement at the BNI does not mean he will stop being a politician. “I still remain a politician” he said in an interview on Citi FM. Koku Anyidoho was arrested by the CID for making some ‘treasonable’ comments on public radio.  In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US. “There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhoea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he added. Koku Anyidoho ended up spending two nights at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) after which he was granted...

WORLD NEWS: U.K. car production falls as domestic demand slumps

Image
The number of cars made in Britain fell in February as domestic demand slumped by "double digit figures", industry figures suggest. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said that 145,475 vehicles were built during the month - 4.4% fewer than a year previously. It blamed a 17% fall in production for the UK market, where consumers are holding back on big ticket purchases. Boss Mike Hawes said the figures were of "considerable concern". More than eight out of ten cars made in Britain are exported, with demand in this market dipping only slightly in February, according to the figures. However, it was domestic demand that suffered, falling from 34,143 to 28,336 units - the seventh consecutive month of decline at home. According to analysts, new car sales have been falling in the UK as Brexit-related uncertainty weighs on consumer spending decisions. They also blame the weaker pound since the Brexit vote, which has made imported vehicles m...

Koku Anyidoho likely to be granted bail tomorrow

Image
Embattled Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho will be bailed tomorrow, Thursday after spending a night in police custody over a ‘treasonable’ comment, sources say. This comes after former President John Mahama and some NDC bigwigs visited him at the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) Headquarters to show solidarity as well as intervene in the matter. Koku Anyidoho was arrested and charged with treason for suggesting that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defense cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana. “Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection that removed the progress party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo Addo’s father was the ceremon...
