GENERAL NEWS: Akufo-Addo to firm-up school reopening after Cabinet meeting on December 30

  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Government in July allowed final year students in the tertiary education institutions to complete their semester courses and wrote their exit examinations. GENERAL NEWS: Jewel Ackah dead.

Musician and supporter of the National Democratic Congress, Jewel Ackah has passed away.

The highlife legend who had been battling stroke and other sicknesses for over 10 years now is said to have passed away at his home in the late hours of Friday April 27.

Jewel, until his demise was on medication and gradually fighting the various ailments.

Known for the popular party anthem for the National Democratic Congress, Jewel is said to have made comments to the effect that he didn’t want to be celebrated when he died when monies could be as well donated during his trying times to cater for his health.

“I want to remind them that they shouldn’t let me die before they come and make Jewel Ackah….Jewel Ackah”, he said while Addressing an NDC group who donated a sum of GHC2,000 towards his medication in August 2017.

He was 73.





About Jewel Ackah

Jewel Ackah was born in 1945 at Axim in the Western Region of Ghana to Emmanuel Ackah and Cecilia Dye.

He started his education at the Axim Roman Catholic primary and completed in Takoradi in 1963. Jewel had a career as a footballer and later joined a shipping company called Palm Line.

He realised shipping was not his field so he was introduced to a traditional drumming group and within a short time he became the best in the group. Jewel was picked up by a renowned musician named Ebo Tailor.

He is one of the few musicians who made popularised the gospel music genre in Ghana after he had drifted from secular music.



He started playing live dance band and played with guys like Elgrand Kwofie, C.K. Mann and Jos Akins as the master of the band. In 1974 Jewel recorded his first album ‘Gyaki Mea’ in the Nzema dialect which was a hit and won him several awards. He also teamed up with Pat Thomas to record the song ‘˜False Lover’ the same year.

Still as a drummer, he joined the famous Sweet Beans Band and through hard work was called to lead the Sweet Talks in Tema. From there he made his trip to the US with C.K. Mann. After his trip he also made some single trips to Canada, back to the US and then to Europe.

Jewel Ackah has over 27 albums to his credit. Some of his songs are ‘Asomdowoe Hene,’ ‘Abena,’ ‘I’m in the Mood,’ ‘Joyce Sane Bra,’ and ‘Me Wo Bi

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Sarkodie declares Akwaboah as best song writer in Africa.

BET award winner, Sarkodie has eulogized his record label signee, Akwaboah as the best songwriter in Africa.  Akwaboah is noted to have written songs for renowned artistes in Ghana and even Africa.  He wrote Becca’s hit single ‘Daa ke Daa’ and ‘Ayeyi Ndwom’ by DSP kofi Sarpong among others.  Akwaboah who signed on Sarkodie’s record label ‘Sarkcess Music’ co-wrote and Produce Sarkodie’s 4th Album dubbed ‘Mary'  The singer cum songwriter whose real name is Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jr recently released his first album under Sarkcess music titled "Matters of the Heart”.
