GENERAL NEWS: Akufo-Addo to firm-up school reopening after Cabinet meeting on December 30

  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Government in July allowed final year students in the tertiary education institutions to complete their semester courses and wrote their exit examinations. GENERAL NEWS: Boy with grade 47 hangs himself for not getting placement.

A 16-year-old boy who had grade 47 in the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has allegedly committed suicide. 

According to reports, the deceased, Daniel Mensah hanged himself for not getting placement to any Senior High School (SHS) 

This unfortunate incident occurred at Brenuakyim, a town at Tarkwa in the Western region. 

The young boy who completed Jesus Mbofra Damfo Preparatory School in Tarkwa did not pass his exams but was hoping he could get admission to SHS.

The issue became worse when he was not placed in any SHS to continue his education. 

Uncle of the deceased, Ebo Ayitey in an interview on Adom News said, Daniel before killing himself left a suicide note for his parents urging them not to think about him anymore. 

“I can’t stay on his earth anymore because I did not get school,” the suicide note said.

GENERAL NEWS: Double Track System: Vacation classes to be held in churches – GES.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...
