GENERAL NEWS: Akufo-Addo to firm-up school reopening after Cabinet meeting on December 30

  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Government in July allowed final year students in the tertiary education institutions to complete their semester courses and wrote their exit examinations. The final year senior high school students also returned to complete their term courses and wrote the West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), while the final year Junior ...

GENERAL NEWS: UG calls off 'inter-university debate' following Vandals, Katanga clashes.

An inter-university debate to be hosted on the University of Ghana campus has been called off after a succession of clashes between students of Commonwealth hall, UG and Katanga hall, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Although the immediate cause of the recent clashes is unknown, it is linked to a long-standing rivalry between the two halls. 

A resident of the Commonwealth Hall was this week given severe beatings and an ugly haircut by rival Katanga Hall residents of KNUST.

He was threatened with death by his attackers who exacted ignominious pleas for clemency from him. 

The students from KNUST were at the University of Ghana to participate in the debate competition between the halls.

But in a twist of events, an escalated clash Monday between the Vandals and Katangees left one person injured and 10 others picked up by the Police.

The clash is believed to be fueled by the video of the attack on the Vandal which went viral on social media.

In the video, the student, wearing a Vandal polo shirt is bullied by some other students whose faces are not shown.

They ask him to plead for mercy and to ask his fellow Vandals to come and pay a ransom for his release.

Joy News' Komla Adom reported on the News Desk show Tuesday that there were renewed clashes Tuesday dawn.

"Student leaders of the two halls and authorities are currently locked up in an emergency meeting," he added.

GENERAL NEWS: Double Track System: Vacation classes to be held in churches – GES.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Sarkodie declares Akwaboah as best song writer in Africa.
