GENERAL NEWS: Akufo-Addo to firm-up school reopening after Cabinet meeting on December 30

  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Government in July allowed final year students in the tertiary education institutions to complete their semester courses and wrote their exit examinations. GENERAL NEWS: EC suspends voter ID replacement exercise.

The Electoral Commission has announced it has suspended the issuance of replacement of Voter ID card with immediate effect.

The commission in a statement Thursday said the move is to enable it mobilise and retool its district Voter Management system (VMS).

“The Electoral Commission announces, with immediate effect, the temporary nationwide suspension of the issuance of replacement voter ID card at its district offices. This is to enable the Commission to mobilise and retool its district Voter Management System (VMS), as part of its preparatory activities toward its scheduled 2018 online Limited Voters Registration Exercise.

“A new date for the resumption of the ID card replacement services will be announced in due course. Any inconvenience caused by this notice is very much regretted,” a statement signed by the Public relations manager of the Commissioner Eric Dzakpasu noted.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has noted that the absence of the biggest opposition party from Wednesday’s Inter-party Advisory Committee meeting organised by the Commission took shine out of the programme.

The NDC declined to attend the meeting which was chaired by the Deputy Chairperson of the Election Management Body, Samuel Tettey citing late invitation.

According to the NDC, it received the invitation to the meeting at 12:15 for a meeting which was to start at 1:00 pm.

A letter inviting the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) including the largest opposition party, the NDC read in parts: “On behalf of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, I am pleased to invite you to Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday 22nd August 2018. The time is 1:00 pm. The venue is the IPAC room of the Electoral Commission.”

GENERAL NEWS: Double Track System: Vacation classes to be held in churches – GES.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...
