GENERAL NEWS: Akufo-Addo to firm-up school reopening after Cabinet meeting on December 30

  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Government in July allowed final year students in the tertiary education institutions to complete their semester courses and wrote their exit examinations. GENERAL NEWS: Government constructing dugouts instead of dams – Mahama.

Former President John Mahama has accused the Akufo Addo government of constructing dugouts instead of the promised dams in villages in the Northern Region.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) made a major campaign promise ahead of 2016 to construct one dam per a village in the three regions up North to improve on irrigation in the area.

But the Ex-President who’s on a campaign tour of the Northern region in his bid to be elected the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) stated that the government has deceived people up north with the construction of dugouts instead of the promised dams.

“I was coming from Mamprusi West and the One Village One Dam and they’ve gone to do the experimental one, of course, they should have told us they were dugouts because they are not dams. Before the elections I asked them are you talking about dugouts or irrigation dams or you are talking of barrage dams or what are you talking about, define what you mean by dams, they refused to answer. Apparently, they were thinking of dugouts, as for dugouts we were digging them already. Under GSOP we dug so many dugouts under the Savanah Region of this country and so its nothing new. So that One Village One Dam really there was nothing in it. It is One Village One Dam, even the dugouts where is it? the dugouts are not even there.”

GENERAL NEWS: Double Track System: Vacation classes to be held in churches – GES.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...
