  President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  is receiving briefings from  COVID-19  Technical Taskforce on limited school re-openings and would make a firm decision on school reopening in January 2021 after a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2020. Addressing a news conference in Accra on  COVID-19  Updates on Tuesday, Information Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah , said the  COVID-19  Taskforce would work throughout the Christmas period to brief the President and analyse the impact of the  COVID-19  pandemic on students, during the limited school re-openings in July, August, September, and October, this year. Ghanaian singer, Mildred Ashong popularly known as Eazzy says no female musician is at par with her in the music industry.  According to Eazzy, who calls herself the ‘first lady’, she tops the ladder when it comes to delivering songs and stage performances during concerts. The only female act she mentioned as a potential threat to her was the late dancehall diva, Ebony Reigns.  She told Ohemaa Woyeje on Adom FM’s “Work and Happiness” on Thursday that: “I don’t see any female musician. Musician eShun says she would have limited her talent if she had decided to do gospel music. She told Franky 5 in an interview on This Is Gospel on Hitz FM that her current secular songs are good enough to reach people from all walks of life. eShun said that she grew up with a very strong Christian background and always found herself behind the microphone singing gospel songs. However, the ‘Akyia’ hitmaker revealed that she took a final decision to do secular music because she believes it is her calling. GENERAL NEWS: Nzema East MCE donates sandals, shoes to schools.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nzema East Municipality in the Western Region, Hon. Frank Okpenyen popularly known as Franko has donated school sandals to schools in the area to facilitate effective teaching and learning.  The donation forms part of his commitment to support and improve effective teaching and learning in the schools of his Municipality.  He donated 400 school sandals of different sizes to five primary schools to some selected deprived pupils to motivate them to attend school regularly.  The beneficiary schools were; Allah Sunna Islamic School of Axim, Agona M/A primary school, Ewuku M/A primary school, Aguafo M/A primary school, Bokro M/A primary school and Kakusuazo M/A primary school.  In addition to the school sandals, exercise books, pencils, pens, crayons and erasers were donated to the schools to aid them in teaching and learning.  He also motivated them biscuits and toffees. GENERAL NEWS: Ghana Robotics Academy competition starts September 28.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish have accepted "significant" libel damages over an newspaper allegation that their dog inflicted "Freddy Krueger-like" injuries on a child at a play date. The couple brought proceedings against News Group Newspapers over a front page story in The Sun on Sunday in February. Their solicitor said the injuries were not serious and that the allegation was "false and seriously defamatory". Neither Sir Elton nor Furnish were at London's High Court on Friday. The Sun's story, captioned Elton's Dog Did This To My Girl, reported that Sir Elton's spaniel bit a five-year-old girl at the singer's Berkshire home in February 2016. ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Payment of royalties will start on Monday – GHAMRO to musicians.

GENERAL NEWS: Two dead, 45 injured in gory accident at Cape Coast.

Two passengers onboard a Hyundai bus died on the spot when their vehicle got involved in a gory accident in the early hours of Wednesday morning.  The accident which occurred at the University of Cape Coast east gate along the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway also left forty-five others sustaining various degrees of injuries with some in critical condition.  Thirty-six of the injured are on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital while the rest were receiving treatment at the UCC hospital.  Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Division Officer 1 (ADO), Abdul Wasiu Hudu, Central Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the incident occurred around 0102 hours on Wednesday. BUSINESS NEWS: Government signs deal with international firm to boost revenue mobilisation.

Government has signed a revenue-mobilisation support deal with an international firm as it struggles to meet revenue targets for the first eight months of this year.  Latest statistics from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) indicates that the total collection was down by almost GH¢2 billion as against the target of a little over GH¢24 billion cedis.  Speaking at an engagement in Accra, the Commissioner-General of the GRA, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, attributed the shortfall to the customs division operations.  “At the customs area, we were negative 18.4% from the target of GH¢1.7 billion...The main area in the short collections in the target for the customs has been in the import duty lines for 2018 and we realized that the levels of the importation have gone than the number of ships which were docking at the ports have gone down and also in the nature of the reports we are investigating that the numbers reporting for zero per cent, exempt and 5% has increased substan...

GENERAL NEWS: Boy with grade 47 hangs himself for not getting placement.

A 16-year-old boy who had grade 47 in the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has allegedly committed suicide.  According to reports, the deceased, Daniel Mensah hanged himself for not getting placement to any Senior High School (SHS)  This unfortunate incident occurred at Brenuakyim, a town at Tarkwa in the Western region.  The young boy who completed Jesus Mbofra Damfo Preparatory School in Tarkwa did not pass his exams but was hoping he could get admission to SHS. The issue became worse when he was not placed in any SHS to continue his education.  Uncle of the deceased, Ebo Ayitey in an interview on Adom News said, Daniel before killing himself left a suicide note for his parents urging them not to think about him anymore.  “I can’t stay on his earth anymore because I did not get school,” the suicide note said. U.S. President Trump tweeted on Saturday that Apple Inc (AAPL.O) should make products inside the United States if it wants to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports. The company told trade officials in a letter on Friday that the proposed tariffs would affect prices for a “wide range” of Apple products, including its Watch, but it did not mention the iPhone. On Thursday, Joy News reported about the sexual misconduct of a teacher who allegedly inserted his fingers inside the vagina of a nine-year-old child. According to the student, whose name has been withheld, the teacher assaulted her after ordering all the pupils to leave the classroom.  "When I started writing, he came closer and rubbed his hands in my head and said my father has asked him to provide all my needs,” she told Joy News’ Maxwell Agbabga.  "He put me on one of the tables and started inserting his fingers into my genitals. GENERAL NEWS: Double Track System: Vacation classes to be held in churches – GES.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it will organise extra classes to augment the regular double track system so that students on vacation can be engaged while they wait their turn to go to school.  Deputy Public Relations Officer of GES, Isaac Asiedu Odei disclosed to TV3 that the extra classes will be held in church halls, community centers and private schools across the country for students on vacation.  He explained that some church halls and community centres are already being used for extra classes as such the ministry will take advantage of the situation.  “You know we have a lot of church halls or community centres…it’s a temporary kind of structure and you know people are organising classes in some of these structures already and we can even take advantage of some private schools, when they close we can also go in there,” he explained.  Mr. Odei also disclosed that government is going to place about four teachers in “every district or...

President Akufo Addo has stated that his vision for the banking sector is to have few but stronger local banks which can compete with their foreign counterparts.  He has disputed claims suggesting that the administration is looking at creating avenues for foreign banks to thrive at the expense of local ones.  Many arguments seeking the interest of local banks have been put across following the revocation of licenses of seven local banks over the past one year.  But speaking to the Ghanaian community in Rwanda, the President stressed that the new path should rather build a robust economy.  “The kind of process we are going through in Ghana when it took place in Nigeria has brought them down to about fourteen banks. Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin, known for the stage name Joey B, says rap music is no longer lucrative in Ghana.  The rapper, in recent times, has made a switch in the style of music he churns out. He has switched from rapping to singing.  Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the ‘Tonga’ hitmaker revealed that he woke up to the realisation that he makes more income from singing than rapping.  “…I was looking at sales and all of that, and then I realised that there is more money in singing than rapping… So I decided to do more singing to get more money…,” he told Andy Dosty.  The winner of ‘New Artiste of the Year’ at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards also stressed that switching from rapping to singing also came as a result of his growth as a musician. Mac Miller, the troubled rapper who won fans with his retro hip-hop but generated uncomfortable attention with songs on ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande and Donald Trump, died Friday at age 26, reports said. Celebrity news site TMZ said that Miller was found dead from an apparent overdose in his Los Angeles-area home and US Weekly said it also confirmed his death. A representative for Miller did not respond to requests for comment and Los Angeles emergency services declined comment. His death comes several months after he ended a high-profile, two-year relationship with pop superstar Grande, often seen as the inspiration for his songs. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s (BABA.N) co-founder and executive chairman Jack Ma will retire from the e-commerce company on Monday, as the former English teacher seeks to focus on philanthropy in education, the New York Times reported. Ma, one of China’s best known corporate leaders, will remain on the company’s board of directors and continue to mentor the company’s management, the New York Times said on Friday. Alibaba was not available for comment outside business hours. Ma, the third-richest person in China, according to Forbes’ billionaire list of 2017, was quoted as telling the New York Times his retirement is not the end of an era but “the beginning of an era.” Alibaba, which was founded by 18 people led by Ma, now has more than 66,000 full-time employees, according to the company’s latest annual filing.
